In the spirit of further experiencing and supporting my friends’ passions, my latest adventure found me psychologically preparing to focus on embracing....my belly! Crap. After 25, that's been the one part of my body I have actively pretended isn't mine.
But here we go! We are going to belly dance and shimmy our way to fitness. We are going to embrace our feminine power. We are going to slink about to spicy music, we are going to be awesome! Please welcome to the stage: Karina and Bellyfit!
Karina has always gravitated towards the arts. I remember meeting her over 10 years ago on a flight across the Atlantic. Humble in her talents, she'd already rocked out a top 10 single with her Montreal based group.
Although singing is her life's dream, dancing, movement and expression has always been a strong undercurrent. And as one enters their mid-30s and fitness requires deliberate focus (add that many exercise programs have come and gone), the idea of the gym just wasn't all that inspiring. It was therefore the perfect opportunity for Karina to blend a love of free flowing, instinctual, visceral movement and music in a heart pumping new groove!
With a focus on self-love instead of self-loathing(body image, ah yes), Bellyfit, as the name suggests, takes its inspiration from belly dancing, some Bhangra and Bollywood as well as a woman's center of strength; her hips. Intended to unite women in a common language of dance, it's empowering and fun and well, pretty darn sexy!
Somewhat intimidated at the idea of jiggling and gyrating, by the time I showed up at the community center one late snowy Monday evening, I was super excited! Bellyfit is just getting off the ground but yet Karina managed to rally 9 woman out of the storm, from across backgrounds to a sometimes energetic, sometimes sultry but always fun hour of exercise!
